After moving from New York City to Indiana, a 12-year-old navigates his parents' divorce, his impending bar mitzvah, and his new school's social circles.

Geek. Poser. Jock. Beauty Queen. Wannabe. These are the labels that can last a lifetime. With an unforgettable rock score from Tony Award-winning composer, Jason Robert Brown, (Parade, The Last Five Years, Bridges of Madison County) 13 is a musical about fitting in – and standing out!

Evan Goldman is plucked from his fast-paced, preteen New York City life and plopped into a sleepy Indiana town following his parents' divorce. Surrounded by an array of simpleminded middle school students, he needs to establish his place in the popularity pecking order. Can he situate himself on a comfortable link of the food chain... or will he dangle at the end with the outcasts?!?

This production is best suited for audiences ages 12 and up.

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Director, Topher Warren

I believe everyone can relate to wanting to fit in. We all as people, at some point in our lives, want to be a part of the “In-Crowd” and are willing to make any sacrifice to make that happen. We would be willing to change our personalities, our looks, our fashion, and all the things that make us individuals and unique just to feel important. For me, we remember these things, and we laugh at how silly it was that we spent so much time caring about them. But for others, these are the experiences that they go through every day.

Our story is about Evan Goldman, a 12-year-old boy who wants so badly, after having his life uprooted, to fit in and be a part of the popular group. However, as he tries to fit in over and over again, he begins to see how unimportant all of that really is. No matter what stage of life we are in, we can all learn from this example and remember that there is always “a little more homework to do.”

In a world that prizes conformity, remember: your uniqueness is your superpower. It is what sets you apart, fuels creativity, and drives progress. Embrace it boldly. Yes,  fitting in is tempting, but being true to yourself is where real magic happens. Celebrate what makes you different, and watch how it inspires others to do the same.

Thank you for coming to our show; I hope you enjoy it!
