A Note From The Director

Like everyone else, theaters have struggled with closings, layoffs, and alternate ways of “being”. And while theater in general may seem trivial in today’s climate, think of all the ways you have passed the time watching TV, movies, even professional shows online. Those performers and technicians and designers and crews have been wondering what’s next for them. Theater and the arts can be as vital as food for artists.

I have spent the last few months learning and researching and conferring with other theater folk to figure out our next steps. Although we could not finish the 19-20 season, we are now looking forward to new ways of production, art creation, and performance. Our shows this year will be performed by volunteers who feel safe out and about, and who also invest in extra precautions to keep each other safe. We are thinking about time, touch, and distance in everything we do now. It has actually increased our dedication to each other and to the process. Performances are rich and nuanced when the element of touch is minimized. Audiences are spaced to provide comfort for live attendees. And at- home viewers get the rare opportunity to view live theatre from the safety of their isolation.

This is the third time I have been involved in a Steel Magnolias production. I have yet to be on stage for it, but that day will come. This script is so real and so vibrant. We just knew a visit to Truvy’s Salon would be just the tonic you were looking for in your first live performance since lock-down. Come on in and set a spell. We have stories to tell.

Stay safe. Be well. Wear your mask.

Cast

DSC_3976_SiennaHobbs.jpg

Sierra Hobbs as Shelby

Sierra has been acting with Pensacola Little Theatre since 2013 when she played three roles in A Year with Frog and Toad, also directed by Kathy Holsworth. Since then the trend seems to be playing crazy southern ladies with all sorts of problems. Maybe…she should take a moment and reflect on that. Sierra was last seen as Linda in Evil Dead The Musical and on the PLT stage in our production of Five Women Wearing the Same Dress. She is also involved with local comedy group Kitty Get a Job.

DSC_3978LeslieYoung.jpg

Leslee Young As M’Lynn

Leslee’s first show with Pensacola Little Theatre was canceled due to Hurricane Ivan in 2004. So what’s a little pandemic…and another hurricane? In 2007 she won a Crystal Award for her role as Flora in Pensacola Little Theatre’s production of 27 Wagons Full of Cotton. Leslee and the cast also represented Pensacola Little Theatre that year at the Provincetown Tennessee Williams Theatre Festival. She was most recently seen as Nora in Will Mr. Merriwether Return From Memphis?. When not acting Leslee wrangles 3 young boys for very little pay.

DSC_3971AnnettteRemitera.jpg

annette Remitera as truvy

Annette’s name anagrams to “Team Entertainer” thanks to her clever mom and dad who just knew that would be her title! You may have recently seen her as robust Rosie in Mamma Mia! or the marvelous Mindy in Five Women Wearing the Same Dress. Annette is ecstatic to shed her most recent persona - the quirkily therapeutic QuaranTina Turner – in favor of playing the timeless joy that is Truvy Jones. And yes, laughter through tears is her favorite emotion.

olivia kegley AS aNnelle

This is Olivia’s fifth time on the PLT stage. Some of her favorite roles include: Jemma from CATS, Goose in Charlotte’s Web, and Betty the Church Lady in Best Christmas Pageant Ever. She also played Truly Scrumptious in Pensacola State College’s summer production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. In addition to being a home-schooled senior and a dual enrollment student in Theatre at Pensacola State College, Olivia also studies dance, classical voice, improv, and American Sign Language.

DSC_3975KellyShepherd.jpg

Kelly Douglas-Shepherd as ‘Ousier

Kelly has played A LOT of characters in A LOT of productions in A LOT of theatres in A LOT of states. Some of her favorite roles from the PLT stage include Kate in Broadway Bound, Gertrude in 33 Variations, Martha in White Christmas, and most recently as Agnes Sawyer in Miracle on 34th Street. She is now typecast as a bitter bitty and is thrilled about it!

DSC_3973ConnieCali.jpg

Connie Cali as Clairee

Being a part of Steel Magnolias has been on Connie’s bucket list since she saw the movie in 1989! She is proud to dedicate her performance as Clairee to her Grandmother and great aunts of Pensacola who served as her role models and inspiration. Connie most recently appeared on the Pensacola Little Theatre stage as Shellhammer in Miracle on 34th Street. Other favorite roles at Pensacola Little Theatre include Amanda in For Whom the Southern Belle Tolls and Beth in Ordinary People. Connie was also seen last fall in Arrant Knavery’s production of Macbeth as one of the Weird Sisters.
