A comical feast that embraces the wackiness in every family features an original story, and it’s every father’s nightmare: Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family– a man her parents have never met. And if that wasn’t upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before– keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.

there will be a 15 minute intermission

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Director, Stephen C. Lott

For the past 85 years The Addams Family have been a part of our lives, and most of think we “know” them, but in truth they have evolved over the years often reflecting the changes in our society. Members of the Addams Family first appeared in a New Yorker magazine cartoon drawn by Charles Addams in 1938.  These single picture cartoons were a dark mirror that poked fun at the trappings of the middle class.  For example, in the very first cartoon, a door-to-door salesman is pitching a noiseless vacuum cleaner to an unimpressed Morticia in the entranceway of their dilapidated mansion.

In 1962, the TV series The Addams Family gave the characters their names, and many of their quirky personality traits that are still associated with them.  The early 60’s were a time when American neighborhoods were starting to integrate and middle class Americans were uncomfortable with this. Along came the Addams, who looked and acted differently; they seemed scary at first glance, but were actually very good and loving people.

In the Barry Sonnenfeld films in the early 90’s, The Addams Family, despite their homicidal tendencies, are more empathic and loving than the “normal” world around them.  In Addams Family Values movie, Wednesday and Pugsley unite the outcasts to show there is power in diversity.  This was also the first time we see the dry, flat delivery now associated with their daughter, Wednesday. Netflix capitalized on that deadpan style in the recent series Wednesday.

Despite their morbid trappings, the Addams were the idyllic family with Morticia and Gomez as the perfect couple.  They never saw themselves as the weird ones; people from outside their world were the ones with corrupt motives.

As we join them in this musical, Wednesday is of college age, and is growing and changing. When one part of the family system changes, all of it needs to adapt. Everyone in the family must examine their relationships both inside and outside of the family.  Gomez and Morticia are faced with issues of trust and loyalty. Wednesday must realize that “normal is an illusion” and her true value and strength are in her unique qualities.

Thank you for supporting this production. My hope is that you enjoy the energy and dedication our talented team brings to the stage and that you love being immersed in this creepy, kooky, mysterious, and spooky creation!

MEET THE ANCESTORS

Ophelia Frump

Ophelia Frump is in many ways the opposite of her younger sister Morticia. She loved bright colors and flowers. In fact, she loved flowers so much they grew out of her head. Briefly she was in an arranged marriage with Gomez Addams; which ended when Gomez and Morticia met. It is said Ophelia died of a broken heart, although drowning certainly didn’t help.

Madame Esmeralda Addams

Madame Esmeralda Addams was an Hungarian fortune teller, skilled with runes, tarot cards and her crystal ball. She was consulted by royalty and commoner alike. It was said Madame Esmerelda knew all and could see all…she died unexpectedly.

Addams Le Fay

It is believed that her fairy blood still runs in the Addams veins, which explains their longevity and immunity to poison, electric shock and torture. Addams Le Fay didn’t really die, but when most of her fay kind were gone she choose to fade into a morning mist on a field of flowers.

Sarah Addams

Over 200 women were falsely accused of being witches during the Salem Witch trials in 1692. In Sarah’s case…well, even a broken watch is right twice a day. She was burned at the stake. It took 14 days for her to burn using up the towns entire reserve of wood, which led to most of the town freezing to death that winter.

Brunhilda Addams

Brunhilda, a powerful Norse Warrior Princess, was legendary both on the battlefield and the dance floor. The party was not over until Brunhilda sang. She reportedly was very rough on stemware.

Alexandria Addams

Explorer, adventurer and time traveler, Alexandria Addams has explored every inch of this globe in the past and the future. She even knew you would be here tonight, and how the show ends. Unfortunately, when she arrived at the same spot at the exact same time as a DeLorean, a Police Box and a Phonebooth she ran out of time.

Captain Green Beard Addams

Was his beard green from being at sea so long that he grew algae or from poor personal hygiene? We may never know. Green Beard was very boastful, he use to brag he was so tough a cannon ball would bounce off him. In the end his crew could see right through him.

Count Vladimir Addams

Romanian warrior in the 1400’s. His late-night parties were renowned all over Europe and England up until his second death in 1897 from a bad stake diner. Famous for his biting humor and was considered a real pain in the neck.

Ripper Addams

Ripper developed quite a reputation in London in the 1880’s as a stand-up comedian. He was known as quite the cut up. He considered himself a “ladies man” but he had commitment issues and was never seen with the same woman twice.

wild bill Addams

Bill started his life as a quiet cow hand, but when he retired, he became de-ranged. He walked into town and shot the local artist. When asked why Bill replied, “I thought he was going to draw.” After telling that joke, the town shot him.

Bjorn Addams

Bjorn Addams was both a great warrior and an intellectual. He invented a method for ships to send secret messages to each other, it was called Norse Code. A rare Buddhist Viking when he died instead of going to Valhalla he reincarnated and was Bjorn again.

Dr. Carn-evil Addams

Ringmaster for the Midnight Circus, a traveling troupe that only performed late at night, with human oddities and bizarre, amazing acts. A bit of a magician himself he was famous for cutting women in half and not putting them back together.
